Niwot High School

I received the following email this week...

My name is Becky Smith, and I am part of the IB program at Niwot High School. I am a senior. As part of our program requirements, we have to do a presentation on a topic of our choice about a knowledge issue prevalent in today's society. My classmate and I chose the rise in single-gender classrooms in schools. We would truly appreciate your input, and your stance on this position.

My students and I have been communicating with Becky, and now I hope some of you will do the same. If you or your students are interested in participating please leave a comment below. Thanks!

Beckey,
I am in Stahlhut's male algebra 1 class. I did not choose to be in here, but is has been interesting to see how the male gender thinks and learns without feminine insight. This class is entertaining, but I personally prefer a mixed gender class. It may just be that I was placed in the wrong group of boys, but I feel like my leraning is hindered with the male class. I get bored waiting for someone to come to a conclusion that it took me mere seconds to come to. I also like the gender rivalry that I have had in a mixed class; it is much more entertaining than pure male oppinions.
I am glad I can help you with your project.

Being in Stahlhut's all girls class has been an interesting experience. I understand the motive behind it, and think it simply depends on the specific person. I myself do not believe I do as well in an all girls class as opposed to a mixed class. This is because I tend to want to impress my peers more when it is a mixed class. What I mean by this is that I tend to care more when there are boys in the class as well as girls. With girls, it is easier to slack off because I don't try as hard and don't care as much. However, I can see how it would be immensely beneficial for some students. Boys in the class can be a distraction and an obstacle. They can also be fairly intimidating to some people. In short, there are both good and bad aspects of the single-gender classes.

Becky,
I'm in Mrs. Stahlhut's all female algebra. I love our single gender class. It's really fun and I get a lot out of it. It's less intimidating than your normal mixed gender class too. If I had a choice though, I would rather be in a mixed gender class. I think it's better to work with the opposite gender and get different opinions. This class has been a good experience for me, but I would rather be in a mixed class.

Becky,
I am in Mrs. Stahlhuts all female algebra 1 class. Personally I did not chose to be in here class, my mom did. I kind of get annoyed with some of the girls here because they are always talking and being really loud. Personally i didn't know that girls could make as much noise as an entire football team. Other than that it is really easy to learn and i'm not afraid to answer questions. I never used to answer questions because of the guys, but now i am answering questions and talking out loud. I really do like single gender classes as much as i like coed classes. I hope you do well on your project and that my input helps you with your project. Good luck!!!!!

Beckey,
I am a girl in Stalhuts single gender class. i was randomly put in this single gender class. i find it easier to concentrate since there are no attrative guys in the class or any guys for that matter. haha. i also think it is easier to learn without guys in the class since they usually are the ones who get in to trouble.
i hope this helps you on your presentation.
good luck! hannah

im in a single gender class and i think that i have done much better in this class then when i had boys in it. Some times they can be loud and rude but as all girls it is more on task. We all get along really well and there really aren't fights.

Beckey,
I am in Stahlhut's female gender class. I also did not choose to be placed in this class, but I can not say I have not learned better and more efficiently. I would also agree and can relate that I become bored in the class.

Hi Becky!
I'm in an all girls algebra I class. I chose to be in this class in hopes that I could better understand the subject(I'm not exactly a math wiz). In this class, I feel like my true personality come out. In a mixted gender class, girls can be pressured with boys in the room because they're worried too much about making an impression upon them. In my single gender class, I don't ever feel like I can't ask a question and my class learns at a pace I'm comfortable with. The girls in my class are able to help each other and together we create a relaxed classroom atmosphere.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I am in Mrs. Stahihut's female algebra 1 class. I really enjoy it. I is less destacting with just girls and no boys. It is easer to understand each other when we are having a disscusion and it is just way more FUN!!!! It is less intimidating without boys and over all i really have a GREAT time in it!!!

We are two girls in the single gender Algebra class and we love the class because we are friends and we feel pressured when sevral guys are in the class room. We dont dislike boys or any thing its just not as fun. We where in an singal gender class last year and we found that everyone was more outspoken and we could talk about girl stuff. We like it but mixed can be more fun.
